PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY
MANIPULATING PSYCHOLOGY THROUGH PHYSIOLOGICAL MEANS,
OFTEN THE EASIER AND/OR FASTEST EFFECTIVE MEANS

"The connections between our physiology and our psychology goes both ways.  And if we think about it, we can use one to affect the other, using very easy, doable moves that are effective immediately!"

PHYSIOLOGICAL BEINGS, NO MAGIC

We often just think there is something wrong with us because we believe we are "not strong enough" or that we "should be able to do better".   We don't realize that we are physiological beings with limitations.  Often our body did not continue to evolve to higher levels in areas where it was not necessary for survival.

An example of the latter would be the fact that our body cannot keep functioning at a high level once we have responded to an emergency - it just cannot handle the human trait of still holding over the idea that we are in danger.  I cannot handle the continuation of stress without breaking down in some way.   Since that is the case, we cannot afford to allow the stress to continue.  We must institute "emergency health measures" to cut off the exacerbation of the problem by continuing the stress.

Ultimately, even our emotions (if you've studied this) are simply physiological sensations associated with beliefs and perceptions that the primitive mind is programmed to respond to.  In short, emotions are physiological, period.   But us humans keep on triggering the patterns over and over so that the emotions that we don't want occur over and over - needlessly, if we learn certain simple tricks.

IT'S NOT SO DIFFICULT, AT ALL!

One of the reasons I am writing this specific piece, even though I use these concepts all over The Site, is to clarify that you can in fact handle the correction of undesired states - and that we do not need to employ the seemingly complicated and impossibleness of deep psychological issues.   In fact, we can affect how our psychological mind thinks (and what it thinks about), without directly having to tinker with our psychology.

IT WORKS!

We feel, as above, calmer if we simply breathe deeply and slowly and/or if we relax or if we do the behavior of distracting ourselves deliberately with something else.  (We often, however, misuse the latter and do behaviors that cause other problems, such as doing addictions, abusing substances, and/or behaviors that cause harm.)

So far, I've mentioned a few short term interventions, to cut the cycle off, but there are also tactics and strategies that will have long term, sustained effects on reducing chronic reactions and their effects.  See Dr. Neil Nedley's Depression Recovery Programs - Comments And Evaluation to understand how changing the diet plus a few other physical, doable interventions in our poor habits can even cure the underlying causes of depression itself - and surely make us non-depressed people feel more calm and be more able to respond well psychologically.  See also The Care Of Your Frontal Lobes - The Key To What Creates A Happy Life

If you really think about it, you might even recall that when you changed your physical posture and/or your position, your emotional state often changes.  Simply standing up straighter with good posture will make you feel better to some extent.  Putting your head down, looking down, caving in your chest and rolling your shoulders inward, etc. (you know the routine if you think about it) you will tend to feel depressed.

Of course, your energy and your chemicals also change when you move in a substantial way.   Though more for energy, the Instant Energy From Something Good list will also elevate one's mood and general feeling of well-being - and alot of or most of that is physiological - simply doing something physical!
